HALEIWA, Oahu/Hawaii (Thursday, February 2, 2017) — After a highly-anticipated morning, the Volcom Pipe Pro, a World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) 3,000 rated event, has been called ON today, Thursday, February 2, in clean but rugged NE conditions with waves face heights up to 10 feet.
“We’ve been watching the surf for a few hours this morning and it’s cleaned up to favor Backdoor,” said Marty Thomas, Event Director. “Conditions are rugged, but the waves are sure to challenge competitors for the rest of the afternoon. Given the forecast we need to take advantage of what we have on offer.”
Day 1 will see charged action from Pipe prodigies Nathan Florence, Koa Rothman and Landon McNamara in Round 1. Today’s competition will begin at 11:15AM Hawaii Standard Time (HST) and see the completion of Round 1 (Heats 1-8) with the Volcom Last Chance Qualifiers heat on standby.
The Volcom Last Chance Qualifiers heat will feature eight Volcom surfers and determine a wildcard slot into the Round of 96 (Round 2). Surfing in this 8-man heat are North Shore heavies Dave Wassel, Tom Dosland, Kawai Lindo, Mark Healey, Derek Ho and recent Sunset Pro Junior winner Barron Mamiya, and Kauai’s Reef McIntosh and Tyler Newton.
